Little Old Lady On Mardi Gras Day
New Orleans Painting #7April 2011

Diary entry: This is a little scene I witnessed on Mardi Gras day. It was about 2 in the afternoon and I was approaching DBA where I'd be working the front door for the day. The streets were already buzzing with revelers in costume but in the midday madness this serene pocket opened up in front of the bar and this little old lady was slowly but purposefully making her way up the street, seemingly unfazed by the costumed freaks parading the streets. She seemed to exist in her own solitary bubble in contrast to the growing drunken hordes that were massing on everywhere. It struck me as a quaint scene amongst all the partying that was going on. I wondered for a moment if she was even aware of what day it was, if she cared, or if she had ever had her own crazy Mardi Gras celebrations many years ago. I reflected on it long enough that it made me want to capture it on canvas... so, here it is.
The need to actually earn money has slowed my production down a bit but I'm proceeding with the project as planned... hope to have a new painting sooner than later.
