Los jugadores de dominó (The Domino Players)Cuba Series - Painting #1
Acrylic on canvas - 36" x 48"
I spotted these men in a shaded alley outside a church in the town of Camaguay. The church sat on the corner of the historic Plaza San Juan de Dios. On this weekday afternoon the plaza was almost totally empty, save for some souvenir merchants and a few locals crossing its cobblestone expanse. Overhead a vulture flew, slowly circling the plaza below.
Inside the church you could hear the sounds of parishioners singing hymns. The smell of incense was drifting out to the adjacent alley where the men were holding their domino game. They played in the relaxed fashion of friends who have been playing together for years. They slammed their domino tiles down in a resolute manner with each move, but a sense of good natured competitiveness belied their aggressive mannerisms.
I watched quietly from the sidelines as they played; admiring their camaraderie. They barely noticed me .
